Warisan president and Sabah Chief Minister Dato’ Seri Shafie Apdal should now be deeply contemplating Tun Mahathir’s earlier bid to choose him as PM candidate, while anticipating any discussion about it with opposition leader Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim, whom Pakatan Harapan (PH) has unanimously backed as their PM candidate on 7 July. Any changes to the political landscape in Sabah are inevitable as his rival from UMNO Sabah, Tan Sri Musa Aman, is now a free man and Datuk Seri Salleh Keruak has now announced that he is joining UMNO once again. UMNO Sabah could rise again to challenge Warisan any time.
Salleh Keruak, who left UMNO along with Tan Sri Datuk Seri Pandikar Amin and few other fellow Sabahan lawmakers in 2018 after Barisan Nasional (BN)’s loss in GE14, has ever since been nowhere under the radar though he once pledged his support to PH and Tun Mahathir’s leadership. Surprisingly, this former Sabah chief minister has now come out of his cocoon to tell the nation that he is joining UMNO and rejecting PKR, amidst the current political turmoil and PH’s internal clash on the PM candidate issue. Being known for his close relationship to Dato’ Seri Najib Razak dan Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, Salleh Keruak may not be the main challenge for Shafie Apdal but he could engage in horse trading with the financial capacity that he owns to overrule Warisan.
History may repeat itself to the day Sabah was ruled by BN and UMNO, and this is what Shafie Apdal should start biting his nails for. He should have not let Tun Mahathir manipulate him and ruin his political future in the state. The PM candidate offer is sweet but could be too sweet for him to handle if he loses to his Sabahan rivals.
