Tun Mahathir’s attempt to prevent Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim from becoming the 8th Prime Minister of Malaysia was a serious back-stabbing on Pakatan Harapan. This is not the first time it has happened in the history of Malaysian Politics and will not be the last time. His sudden resignation was not expected by the Malaysians. His sudden decision caused uncertainty in Malaysia at a time the country battles with Covid-19 Pandemic and the economic crisis which was inevitable.
It is alleged that Tun Mahathir had all along planned the formation of a unity government and Tun Mahathir did nothing to stop the purported coup led by former PKR deputy president Dato’ Seri Azmin Ali and chose to stay at home instead.
Why didn’t Tun Mahathir hand over the premiership to Anwar Ibrahim and retire peacefully as he knows he will not be in politics forever? He has all the powers to remove Cabinet Ministers and re-appoint others at any time. Had he done that and nominated Anwar Ibrahim as the Prime Minister, Malaysia would not have felt the political crisis at these unprecedented and trying times. It was mockery for Tun Mahathir wanting the same position after resigning. His resignation was a political game in the eyes of the masses. But at his age with all the experience he had, he should not have done so. It is evident when he accepted the post as Interim Prime Minister, it was to buy time for Azmin Ali to orchestrate his Sheraton Part 1.
Indeed, it was evident from the moment Tun Mahathir took office as the 7th Prime Minister, he had no intention of handing over the premiership to Anwar Ibrahim. Tun Mahathir’s opinion of the latter was spelt out in a 1998 video, in which he had told the world press that Anwar Ibrahim was not fit to be prime minister because he lacked moral rectitude. Until today, despite grinning photo opportunities of him and Anwar Ibrahim together, he has never apologised or retracted his condemnation of Anwar Ibrahim. In the days prior to Sheraton Part 1, Tun Mahathir made it clear to all that he was prepared to work with UMNO, PAS and Azmin Ali’s band of PKR traitors and vehemently refused to be tied down to naming a date to handover to Anwar Ibrahim.
The reason Tun Mahathir gave for resigning, the incessant importuning by PKR and DAP leaders to name the handover date and his refusal to do so and the departure of his own party Parti Pribumi from the Pakatan Harapan coalition is really frivolous. Doesn't Tun realize that by allowing Muhyiddin Yassin lead the Country, Malaysia is now facing its toughest economic battle since independence with proper direction resuscitate?
