Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin should be truly shaken now that 18 May is drawing near. Should he be more relaxed even though Tun Mahathir’s motion of no confidence has now been disallowed to be highlighted in the Parliament this Monday?
Over the last weekend, Tun Mahathir signaled to work with Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Pakatan Harapan (PH) to regain the people’s mandate won on 9 May 2018, while a camp in UMNO is breaking lose with the move to oust its president Dato’ Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. What could be next? Being the government not acknowledged by the people, where else could Muhyiddin Yassin go to get help? Technically for now, PAS is entirely happy under Perikatan Nasional (PN) as a number of its bigshots have gained special and GLC positions. Similarly, those in UMNO who barked at Muhyiddin Yassin like fierce housedogs are now silenced with more GLC-leading positions showered to them like Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid for TNB, Dato’ Sri Tajuddin Abdul Rahman for Parasarana, and Dato’ Seri Idris Jusoh for Felda. Could buying these individuals make Muhyiddin Yassin sustain his power? Speculations claimed that PN has already gained more than enough majority to continue ruling with Barisan Nasional (BN), PAS, GPS and independent parties. Though Muhyiddin Yassin can breathe a little bit easier with this calculation, anything that could turn his life upside down can happen within these few days. Will he run and bring his entourage into UMNO’s arms through Zahid Hamidi or Muhamad Hasan? Or should he give in to PH and the rightful one for the people’s sake? Time will tell.
