Tun Mahathir has been seen as the persona that has often hindered Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim from becoming the Malaysian Prime Minister in decades. Although the rivalry they had since late 1990s was technically forgotten by some especially when Pakatan Harapan (PH) had agreed to appoint Tun Mahathir to first lead the coalition with the condition that there will be a transition of the premiership to Anwar Ibrahim within an ‘agreed period’, PH has since been blamed and mocked for the ‘mistakes’ done by the 94-year-old man. Worse, the downfall of PH in February 2020 has further diverted the people from realizing the treachery and corruption brought in by the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government led by Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin. As a result from Tun Mahathir’s resignation as prime minister right after his claim of disagreeing to the “scheme of thing” proposed by Muhyiddin Yassin right before the Sheraton Move on 23 February 2020, any effort by PH to regain the people’s mandate given to them in May 2018 has been downgraded by the people who had lost hope and trust. Even Anwar Ibrahim has been affected by this though he is leading PH as an opposition leader yet has often been sidelined by Tun Mahathir.
Many have been urging Anwar Ibrahim to stop clinging onto Tun Mahathir in PH as the latter has been ‘hurting’ him for so many times. Even the vocal Otai Reformasi group who has been pro-Anwar since 1990s has recently renewed their condemnation of the ‘annoying’ Tun Mahathir and called PH to reject any move to name him prime minister again. Propagating Anwar Ibrahim as the most suitable person to lead the government, this group warns PH of the possibility of history to repeat itself again when Tun Mahathir regains power as he will not simply resign and will cause the people to lose trust on PH even more.
Perhaps it is time for Anwar Ibrahim to stand firm by principles that he has been holding on to. Perhaps Anwar Ibrahim must divorce from Tun Mahathir who has relentlessly admitted behind the media that he will never work with the PKR president. Malaysians are very sure that Anwar Ibrahim will win their hearts and trust through his caliber as a leader without being marred by the image of the greedy Tun Mahathir that they are already tired with.
